Canon S500 Vs. Sony DSC-W1. I'm torn! [Archive] - Digital Camera Resource Page - Forums
The S500 uses proprietary batteries, while the W1 does not, the W1 has a bigger LCD, but has less pixels/inch ratio and etc...... My heart was leaning towards the W1, when I just found out that it only offers up to 1/1000 shutter speed, compared to S500's 1/2000....

Battle of the Minis: Canon s500 vs Sony DSC-W1 [Archive] - Digital Camera Resource Page - Forums
There have been a lot of topics about the W1 with debates about image quality and other issues.... I'd rather have the better camera, rather than settle on one just because it is a little cheaper (not implying that the S500 is necessarily better because it's more expensive, but if it's better for YOU)....

Overall, the Canon has a better form factor and a more compact look, even if they are about the same size....

Canon S500 vs. Canon S60 vs. Sony DSC-W1 - Canon - Digital Cameras (Point and Shoot) - Steves Forums
The Sony is a bit bigger than the S500, of course, but not by much.... The underwater kit for the S500 is also an intriguing option I hold to take advantage of at some point....
