At higher sensitivities the EOS 400D delivers more detail but with slightly more chroma noise, the D80 less detail but a cleaner more 'film like' appearance to noise grain...... If the D40X is the same price as the 400D, why would anyone want the lens limitation of the Nikon when there are other good choices in the price range....

You've also forgotten about the likihood of a D6_ appearing this year to fit between the D40X and D80 that will in all probablity have the AF motor.... Xti is better value as it has superior AF, lower price and wider lens selection(probably also has better low light performance)....
